  • Photo by @rezaphotography #France, Cathedral of Albi

Spirituality.

Over the course of my wanderings through the south of France, I roamed from village to village in search of an authentic, rural France. Memories of my first photographic forays in Iran, when I was barely more than an adolescent, rose to the surface. Almost three decades later, the time had passed, leaving the lasting impression over the course of this long reportage that it had been a gift. I opened the doors to the magnificent cathedral of Albi. I climbed a hidden stairway to gain some height and get as close as possible to the lancet arches of this treasure of Gothic art. The weather was gloomy and the cathedral was plunged in the obscurity which gave me precious little opportunity to reveal its beauty.

A ray of light pierced the clouds. Without a flash, I did not alter the ambience, nor did I attract the attention of the crowds. For an instant, the divine light filled the space. A pause, a heartbeat... I reflected that the houses of God, whatever religion they belonged to, are places where all can encounter a certain peaceful spirituality.

  • PROMOTHEUS
After the Moment

I was coming out of three days at the Liancourt Prison. I was not incarcerated; thanks to Robert Badinter, the Attorney General at the time, I was granted access to do a reportage on prisoners with life sentences, some of whom were very sick. I was shaken by what I had seen.
It was during the early hours of the morning. I wanted to drop off my film as quickly as possible at the Rapho Agency, then on the Rue d’Alger in Paris. I had a bit of time before the office opened for the day so I decided to take a stroll in the Tuileries and finish up my film. I’ve always had a hard time not getting to the end of each roll of film. I heard the sound of wings; my camera is always at the ready and I snapped a few photos. Some birds and a statue. Nothing more. A few days later, I developed this photo which I quite liked. A shot of a sculpture of a figure in chains and a free bird. My friend Adriano Sofri, an Italian intellectual who was visiting me at the time exclaimed, “Hey Reza, are you now into mythology?” I didn’t understand the allusion, so he recounted the story of Prometheus, the Titan who wanted to bring fire to mankind and so the gods condemned him to be chained to a rock in perpetuity while an eagle continuously devoured his liver, which kept regenerating. In Paris, Prometheus was a statue and his tormentor, a pigeon. The explanation for an instant that one seeks to capture sometimes comes after the moment. SEE COMMENT FOR FRENCH VERSION

I was on a few months assignment for National Geographic Magazine. It took years to get access to that very protected region of Xinjiang (Eastern Turkestan). I had the chance to meet Tadjik, Uyghurs, and Kazaks. The Altai Mountains is the birthplace of the Turkic tribes which, over the course of millennia, spread out towards the west. The last two centuries saw the two neighbouring great powers divide the vast steppes of Central Asia among them. Russia, over the course of its conquest of the southeast region, invaded Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan. China advanced to the west, annexing Eastern Turkestan, the land of the Uyghurs, along with other tribes. They named the region Xinjiang, which means “new frontiers. The Kazakhs, who live in the Altai mountains, pursue their transhumance, braving the will of the central government to make these nomads sedentary.
On the heights of Mount Altai, every single day a Kazakh woman brings a bucket of milk to the yurt where she lived with her family.

  • WRATH OF THE GODS
Mount Nemrut. Huge sculptures built by King Antiochus the 1st for his tomb on Mount Nemrut are laced with cracks or toppled on their sides due to the geologic activity in the area. Nemrut Dagi is a 2,150 meter high mountain in Anatolia, south-eastern Turkey. At the top of it, King Antiochus Theos of Commagene built his tomb-sanctuary along with huge statues (8-9 meters high) of himself and various Greek and Persian gods in 62 BC. This tomb contains stone carvings of gods, such as the head of an eagle. The heads of all the statues on both the eastern and western terraces have fallen to the ground, most probably as a result of the earthquakes that plague the region.
Picture taken while on assignment for National Geographic Magaine on the Anatolian fault.

  • THE FIRST DAY OF SPRING OF MY CHILDHOOD
(...)There was the Novruz holiday, the celebration of the vernal equinox (March 20-21) that represented nature, renewal and fertility, bringing with it the refreshing spirit of hope and renewal. This holiday was a chance to renew friendships and strengthen relationships. A time for parties and new shoes and clothes that we would be given as if they were treasures from afar, a time for visits, invitations, meeting up with cousins, dancing and laughter. Deep inside, I still have a powerfully luminous image of the warmth and carefreeness of those years.

LE PREMIER JOUR DU PRINTEMPS DE MON ENFANCE

THE HEART OF A WOMAN
I saw her in a mourning, praying in a church of the Middle East region, shaken by fratricidal wars. I thought about this poem by Khalil Gibran in his book, Broken Wings.
"A woman’s heart will not change with time or season; even if it dies eternally, it will never perish. A woman’s heart is like a field turned into a battleground; after the trees are uprooted and the grass is burned and the rocks are reddened with blood and the earth is planted with bones and skulls, it is calm and silent as if nothing has happened; for the spring and autumn come at their intervals and resume their work." Khalil Gibran
Khalil Gibran.
