"She has become more closely identified with nature, 'freed from non-essentials'." - Edward Weston, speaking of Henrietta Shore.
In honor of Women's History Month our California and Western Paintings & Sculpture department features Henrietta Shore's monumental and commanding "My Cat", ($100,000 - 150,000), a leading lot in their upcoming sale on April 16 in Los Angeles.
Art critics had forecasted Canadian-born Henrietta Shore would be enshrined in the Pantheon of American art along with her fellow-artist Georgia O'Keeffe, but unfortunately at age 83 she died destitute and forgotten in a mental institution in San Jose, California. Shore also had been a fellow student of O'Keeffe's at the Art Student's League of New York. In 1923, when both artists simultaneously exhibited abstracted nature scenes in New York, Shore's work attracted more praise from the critics.
After a three-year study in New York, Shore returned to Los Angeles in 1923, abandoning her former teacher Robert Henri's dark palette of deep blacks and blues, and significantly lightening her palette. The warm and brilliant sun of California led her to luxuriate in dazzling yellows, oranges, crimsons, and greens in her paintings. Swipe to see first layers! ➡️ What’s your struggle ?? My struggle with printmaking...registration! Perfectly lining up each layer, the paper and the block exactly to create that layered effect! 😬 it can be very frustrating.
Though I finally got the first layer down on the thistle print after wrestling with the pressure on my press and working on registration! Hoping all goes well and lines up in the next layer .
Huge thanks you to @neaarts and #wvdivisionofartscultureandhistory for providing me with the funds to purchase a press. It’s a live saver and such a great learning opportunity ❣️ #therevealpeel
For this #fashionfriday here’s a portrait of a very stylish young woman by the Venetian Rococo artist Rosalba Carriera. Carriera was the most sought after portraitist of her day and one the most successful women artists of any period. She made likenesses of royals and nobles, including the King of France himself, in her trademark pastels.
(The sitter for this portrait, Felicita Sartori, was also an artist, and one of Carriera’s pupils).
Rosalba Carriera (1675-1757). Portrait of Felicita Sartori. Ca. 1730-40. Pastel on canvas.

I've done this blog since 2011. Dont spend as much time on it as I used to but still get a couple emails a week, and 2thousand or so followers. I thank the 1000 plus women I've featured for inspiring me to make my own unabashed work. Always take submissions. #feministart#womenartists#lesfemmesfolles
We’re so excited to have @allisonjames.co as one of our #birdbricks artists because she’s known us from our beginning days! Her dynamic abstract paintings tap into something different for each viewer depending on their experiences and memory associations with her unexpected color combinations. We’ve not known her to illustrate animals so we’re on the edge of our seats to see what she does! Fun fact: she was one of our original food hand models 😉 #morningsidevillageatl
Had to hang some new work in the space after Tuesday’s event. Feeling so humbled and so much gratitude. 🙌🙏

👀 Tonight’s Art Zone on Channel 21 at 8pm! ⏰ Check out link in bio for the video preview 📺. Filmed at the Georgetown Stables with Nancy Guppy and the fab Seattle Channel crew. ( I tried so hard not to laugh )
✨Here’s a stop motion test I did recently ! ✨I learned so much from this, like how important it is to lock the aperture so it isn’t on auto, and how shutter remotes don’t always work....oh yeah, and be sure to not bump the camera so your head doesn’t get cut off 😂 so excited to do more with this. More to come ✨
