  • The last step before oiling is burnishing. I use a smooth porcelain pestle to rub across the entire surface with as much pressure as I can muster, this crushes the wood fibers making the wood shine and helping it to be more water and wear resistant.

  • Last shot of these for a while. I've got a few of them up on the website now too, where they've not been available before. Next up, I think, will be a bit of a break from walnut . . . .

  • Finished this chunky eater in cherry yesterday. I also worked on a small cherry eater, and a small maple eater (which snapped in my hands sadly). It was a beautiful, productive day!

  • **tool update**
I recently splashed out on a twca cam, an enormous spoon knife that I've seen quite a few spoon carvers using. I got this one online through Gilles in Lithuania. It's designed to allow you to hollow out the bowl much more efficiently. Like many specialist tools, it came "unhandled". My Dad gave me a lovely piece of American Oak and together we drilled/burned a hole deep enough to insert the knife. I then spent several hours at my shave horse, shaping an octagonal handle with my drawknife and spokeshave, finishing it with some fine grit paper and some hemp oil. I really enjoyed the process and now have an amazing tool to help me get a better finish to my spoon bowls!

  • If you're interested in a Christmas order, read this post!⛄🎅🌲
.
Let me know as soon as possible if you'd like to order some spoons to guarantee an order before Christmas. The holiday season is right around the corner, and I want to ensure that I get spoons to as many people as I can.
.
Cost: $9-13 for spreaders and salt scoops (minis), $17-25 for smaller table spoons, $20-30 for cooking/serving spoons, $25-35 for ladles.
.
I will be limiting Christmas orders to 2 regular spoons per person and 1 mini.
.
Limit of one ladle per person. Also depends on how many bent branches I can find.
.
When requesting a spoon, please send me a description (length, dark/light wood, what it will be used for, painted handle, et c) of a spoon that you would like, and I will do my best to make it. Or send me a screenshot of one of my spoons (check @alexbrechbill for additional spoons) or a design that you like.
.
I will post again once I feel I have a full list.
.
If you have any questions let me know!! #carving #woodenspoon #kitchenalia #axe #knife #handtoolsonly
