Travel Tuesday: Fight the notion that travel has to be extravagant. You don’t always have to go somewhere grand! Visit to a nearby city. Even if you’ve been there before, there’s plenty of different things to do for a new experience.
I spent the weekend in Tampa celebrating my cousin Virg’s birthday! We found amazing hotel deals and it was driving distance for us both! We had an amazing trip!
Happy Birthday Virg! I love you dearly. You’re an amazing father, human being and one of my best friends! #traveltuesdays#tampa#clearwaterfl#florida#ybor#stpete#yesforless
One of the things we love about sharing local history is that you guys end up teaching US! Early today over on our Facebook we learned SO much about the history of Brooksville. This is part of what was shared!
"Hernando was briefly called Benton county named after a senator but it angered residents that he supported The Missouri compromise and changed his position on slavery speaking against it. The name was changed back to Hernando on 1850.
In 1855 they voted to move the county seat to Melendez near the center of the county and in 1856 renamed it to Brooksville in honor of a representative of South Carolina who beat an abolitionist nearly to death with a walking stick for speaking out against slaveholders on the senate floor."
🤓 Some fun facts about the beating...Representative Preston Brooks attacked Senator Charles Sumner after Sumner gave a speech not only calling for the end of slavery but ALSO insulting Brooks' cousin. Apparently that wasn't cool in Brooks' opinion and on the FLOOR of the US sentate he almost beat Sumner to death. Literally, Sumner almost died from his injuries. It took him 3 years to recover and resume his Senate seat. This was 5 years before the Civil War started. Brooks actually was never removed from office for his actions. As a publicity stunt he resigned his office and his constituency re-elected him. He was so popular in the south he was sent new walking sticks regularly. Unfortunately for Brooks he died less than a year after the incident at the age of 37. Shortly after the incident the city of Melendez changed its name to support Brooks. However officially it only became the city of Brooksville in 1871 after the Civil War had ended and the US government officially renamed the post office.
