  • For me, Zumba's annual global convention, Zincon 2019, has a heightened significance ⚘ (photo: a typical post Zumba-class lunch with the gang at my house) In several days I depart for my 12th annual pilgrimage to the international Zumba instructors convention.  Many thousands will travel to Orlando from over 120 countries to learn, grow and celebrate our common passion.  It is a coming together of love, craft, artistry, respect and support like no other. Why the heightened significance?  We live in times that challenge the very fabric of our humanity.  A grotesque corralling of fear has created a climate of exclusion, deprivation and hostility.  And while my country undergoes an identity crisis the likes of which have not been experienced since perhaps the Civil War, I lean into my beloved Zumba Community as it welcomes with open arms those from every walk of life and from every corner of the globe. At our convention, we enhance our collective humanity and strengthen our individual spirits by celebrating every stunning  cultural variation that we bring to the table.  Indeed, there is a heightened importance to this years convention that I intend to take in like a restorative elixir, renewing my faith in people and reminding me how beautiful life can be when love and acceptance dwarf fear and oppression.  Can't wait to see each of you who can make it to #zincon2019 🌿 #zumbalove

  • Thanksgiving, a time to gather in loving gratitude and to honor the generosity, integrity, struggle, loss and rich heritage of North America's indigenous tribes. Painting: Fancy Dancer II, J. Nieto (through bold use of primary colors, Nieto depicts the beauty of his Hispanic/Native American ancestry)

  • Happenning Now: Transgender Day of Remembrance Vigil, Doylestown, PA
Grateful for the opportunity to express my feelings at tonight's candlelight vigil.  Since Jan, 2017 more than 50 trans people have died from violence in the US.  No, we may never fully eradicate prejudice, yet a significant part of the challenge is the silence and inaction of good people.  One does not have to fully understand the trans experience in order show compassion and respect and to recognize that all people are entitled to live in the dignity of their own truth. India's legendary Maharishi Mahesh was once asked by one of his followers, How should we treat others? He responded in 4 words. "There are no others." To those who identify as Trans, I see you, I honor your truth, I acknowledge your challenges, I speak out against prejudice and I stand with you ⚘ #transgenderdayofremembrance
